Policy
According to the Florida Board of Governors and FIU policy, all international students with F and J visas statuses are required to have medical insurance before registration. Documentation must be submitted to the Health Compliance Office via email to insure@fiu.edu.
Students will receive an "IMI" insurance hold on their student account. Students will not be allowed to register for classes or continue enrollment without complying with the medical insurance requirement. Temporary hold removals will not be granted by our office. There are no exceptions to this rule.
Complete the medical insurance requirement in one of two ways:
- By purchasing the FIU Sponsored Health Insurance Plan.
- By submitting proof of alternative insurance that is compliant with all the Florida Board of Governor’s requirements
Please be aware that there is 24-48 hours processing time during weekdays for all incoming documents. To check the status of your hold, you may log on to your my.fiu.edu account.
The minimum coverage dates for each term are listed below:
Coverage must be continuous. It cannot lapse during school breaks, even if you return to your country during the break.
Coverage Terms | Effective Date | Termination Date |
Annual | August 1, 2024 | July 31, 2025 |
Fall | August 1, 2024 | December 31, 2024 |
Spring* | January 1, 2025 | April 30, 2024 |

Summer Only** | May 1, 2025 | July 31, 2025 |
*International students must purchase Spring and Summer insurance, regardless of study plans, unless graduating in Spring. Students graduating must provide a note from their academic advisor confirming credit requirements for graduation have been met to be approved from Spring coverage.*
**Summer-Only is for Newly admitted/Transfer student taking classes for the First time at FIU**
- F1/J1 visa continuing student summer class enrollment is optional, but insurance coverage is MANDATORY, regardless of overseas, in-person or online status.
- For students with insurance coverage through their government’s embassy, the only acceptable document for compliance with insurance requirements is the FIU Alternative Insurance Compliance Form, which must be completed by an embassy representative for the current term(s).
- If you are a continuing sponsored student, please be advised that you must submit a new FIU Alternative Insurance Compliance Form every semester to ensure you maintain continuous coverage throughout your time at FIU. New forms must also be submitted every time you extend your current policy or purchase a new insurance policy. Failure to comply with this request may result in termination of your SEVIS record. Holds are not removed without status updates.
International students must make a one-time payment for the coverage needed for the academic year. (Monthly plans will not be accepted unless paid in full) If you terminate your coverage during the semester, Health Compliance will contact the Office Registrar and your classes will be dropped. As a result of this your SEVIS record will be affected.
