International Graduate Assistants, Teaching Assistants

Florida International University provides subsidized health insurance to all International Graduate Assistants, Teaching Assistants, and Fellows holding a full-term appointment for 20 hours per week. The insurance holds of international students is removed by FIU’s Student Health Services (SHS) once the insurance enrollment information for students holding GA/RA/TA contracts is available to them. The insurance enrollment list is to be submitted to SHS as soon as all contract details are in (prior to registration deadlines).

 International Graduate Assistants will pay a percentage of the insurance premium through payroll deduction. All international Graduate Assistants are required to participate in this health insurance opting out of the GA Health Insurance Plan does not apply to international students, or students on an F1 or J1 visa.

Please be aware that there is a 24-48 hours processing time during weekdays for all incoming documents. To check the status of your hold, you may log on to your my.fiu.edu

Graduate Assistants will pay a percentage of the insurance premium through payroll deduction. All Graduate Assistants are required to participate in this health insurance plan unless they wish to opt-out.

(This does not apply to international students, or students on an F1 or J1 visa*)

Graduate Assistants and Fellows are automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan (SHIP). Graduate Assistants and Fellows may opt out of SHIP by submitting proof of alternate insurance.

Opt out of the GA Health Insurance Plan

1. Go to https://fiu.mycare26.com
2. Click on “Opt Out”

To qualify for a waiver of SHIP, your alternate health insurance must meet or exceed the requirements as set forth below and AHP must receive the waiver request by the waiver deadline.

1-The health insurance must be currently active.

*Opt-Out for International students: The opt-out for international students (F1 and J1 visa holders) is processed through FIU Student Health Services. To initiate opt-out, complete the International Student Health Insurance Compliance Form.
