Insurance Information for International Students

All international students in F or J status are required to have medical insurance that meets Florida Board of Governors and FIU requirements before registering for classes. Students who do not meet this requirement will have an IMI insurance hold placed on their account.

Complete Your Insurance Requirement

International students can meet the insurance requirement in one of two ways:

  1. Enroll in the FIU Student Health Insurance Plan
Students may purchase the FIU-sponsored health insurance plan through Academic HealthPlans.
Best for: students who want the FIU-approved plan without submitting alternative insurance documents.
  2. Submit a Pre-Approved Alternative Insurance Plan
Students may submit proof of a pre-approved alternative insurance plan that meets FIU and Florida Board of Governors requirements.
Important: Employer, family, marketplace, and other non-pre-approved plans are not accepted unless listed as approved by FIU.

How to Remove the IMI Hold

To remove the IMI insurance hold, students must:

  1. Purchase the FIU Student Health Insurance Plan, or
  2. Submit approved alternative insurance documentation to Health Compliance.

Documents are reviewed during business days. Please allow 24–48 hours for processing. Temporary hold removals are not granted.

Insurance coverage must be continuous and cannot lapse during breaks, even if the student leaves the United States during the summer term.
