Chapter 31: Veteran Readiness and Employment

If you have a service-connected disability that limits your ability to work or prevents you from working, Veteran Readiness and Employment (formerly called Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment) can help. This program (also known as VR&E) helps you explore employment options and address education or training needs. In some cases, your family members may also qualify for certain benefits. How do your benefits work at FIU?

    Request to have your classes certified each semester you wish to use your benefits.

  • How will I receive this benefit?

    Chapter 31 students are eligible to receive three main education benefits each enrollment period they use their benefits:

    1. Tuition Payment: Your VR&E counselor will provide you with a Tuition Purchase Order number (PO#) which Student Financials will use to bill your tuition and fees associated to courses required for your degree plan.
    2. Book Voucher: Your VR&E counselor will provide you with a Books Purchase Order number (PO#) to use at the FIU Bookstore to purchase your course required books.
    3. Housing Stipend: Students enrolled 1/2 time or more (50% or more) are eligible to receive a housing/sustenance stipend (this varies case by case and can be further explained by your VR&E counselor).
  • Tuition payment information

    FIU will report 100% of your in-state tuition costs to VR&E. Any courses that are not part of your degree plan cannot certified or billed to VR&E.

  • Book voucher information

    Your VR&E counselor will provide you with a PO# specific to FIU's Barnes & Nobles bookstore. This PO# will be used similar to a voucher for the purchase of your school materials. View a guide to purchasing materials.

  • Monthly housing allowance information

    Students with a Rate of Pursuit (RoP) equal to or greater than 50% may be eligible for MHA every month they they are enrolled in courses. The MHA rate is equivalent to the BAH rate of an E-5 with dependents for the school's zip code when taking in-person courses.

  • What if I am still on active duty?

    For students on active duty, payment is limited to  tuition and fees for the courses taken. Active duty members are not eligible to receive MHA from VR&E.
