This year, FIU’s Common Reading Book is Starstruck: A Memoir of Astrophysics and Finding Light in the Dark by Sarafina El-Badry Nance. Like this marvelous book, the museum’s exhibition, Lee Bontecou’s Untitled, expresses the challenges many women face in male-dominated industries and how in life we must persevere and work through the unexpected challenges we often face.

The artist, Bontecou, invites viewers to confront vastness and emptiness, which mirror the emotional and existential themes in Starstruck. We invite students to explore their curiosity, the black holes of the unknown, and to consider the vastness of space described in the book with the vastness of the universe and its boundless possibilities.
