At FIU’s Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), our mission is to provide all FIU students with mental health services and support that will facilitate and enhance their personal growth, emotional well-being, and academic skills development.
What to expect
During the initial appointment, students meet with a therapist to discuss current concerns, gather information about the student’s history, and review recommendations for treatment. The recommended treatment may include individual or group therapy provided by the Counseling Center or a referral to community providers.
CAPS offers limited, short-term counseling. If you need or prefer long-term or weekly counseling, then a referral to a community provider may be a better fit for you. The Counseling Center does not offer long-term, intensive, or specialized treatment generally required for substance misuse, personality disorders, or severe or chronic emotional difficulties.
Students generally attend counseling appointments that last about 45 minutes and occur every 2-3 weeks.Scheduling an appointment
