Swim placement test required before registration

All participants must complete a swim test assessment to be placed in the correct level. Tests are held the weeks of May 11–21 for the June class session. Additional dates will be added for future class sessions.

About the Program

The Learn to Swim program offers various skill levels for individuals aged 4 and up, designed to help them safely and effectively develop their swimming skills.

Each level includes important water safety training, with skills taught step by step. Our goal is to help participants swim with confidence and stay safe in, on, and around the water. Join us for lessons led by our certified Red Cross instructors at the Aquatics Center on the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus.

  • Waivers
    • Waivers are required for all participants.
  • Make-up Class
    • One makeup class will be provided if a class is canceled due to inclement weather. The makeup dates are as follows:
      • For Monday/Wednesday June classes: June 29 
      • For Tuesday/Thursday June classes: June 30

 

 

Step 1: Swim Test Assessment

Attend one assessment day to be placed in the correct swim level. The swim test assessment is free. Tests take about 5 minutes per participant and are administered on a 15-minute rotation, where participants demonstrate their skills with one of our instructors.

  • All participants must demonstrate readiness to swim and the ability to follow instruction in order to join group lessons.
  • Participants entering a level above Level 1 will need to complete the checkout skills from the previous level.
  • Choose the assessment day that matches the program track for the participants age.

Step 2: Levels & Class Times

Below are the descriptions of each level. Register for the level assigned by our instructors based on the results of the swim assessment. Classes run throughout the summer. Participants who complete a level 1 or 2 will have the opportunity to continue to the next level in the following sessions. July and August session dates will be added soon.

 

Preschool Aquatics (June 1 - 24)

Level 1 — Introduction to the Aquatic Environment

Introduces young children to the aquatic environment and helps them develop basic water skills. Also introduces essential water safety practices.
Prerequisite — COMPLETION OF SKILLS ASSESSMENT TEST
Level 2 — Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Mon & Wed (30 mins)
Builds on Level 1 with more advanced skills, basic propulsion on front and back, and the start of independent movement in the water.
Prerequisite — Successful Completion of Level 1 Exit skills assessment

Introduces participants to the aquatic environment and helps them develop basic water skills, along with essential water safety practices.

Level 2 — Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Builds on Level 1 with basic propulsive movements on front and back. The start of independent movement in the water.
Prerequisite — Successful Completion of Level 1 Exit skills assessment
Level 3 — Stroke Development

Tue & Thu (30-45 mins)
Front crawl and elementary backstroke at a basic proficiency level; introduces scissors and dolphin kicks. Practice the survival float, increase tread-water time, and learn safety rules for headfirst entries (in water 9 ft or deeper). Achieves basic water competency in a pool setting.
Prerequisite — Successful Completion of Level 2 Exit skills assessment
