Transfer Orientation

Orientation is a fun and educational program that is critical to your success as a new Transfer student. You can expect to:

  • Learn about academic policies and requirements.
  • Get familiar with campus buildings/landmarks.
  • Hear about resources and involvement opportunities.
  • Make connections with other new students.
  • Receive information on academics and get prepared for your advising and class registration day.
  • Learn about how to register for your first semester of classes! 

Orientation is mandatory for all undergraduate transfer students, so be sure to take the steps below as soon as you can!

Transfer Orientation Dates

Note: Registration for Orientation is first-come, first-served and sessions will close once they've reached their maximum capacity. 

Spring 2025 Admitted Students (Classes start January 6)

There are no available Orientation dates left for the Spring 2025 semester. Please see below for your next steps in registering for classes. 

Early Fall 2025 Admitted Students (Summer A/C - Classes start May 5, Summer B - Classes start June 16)

The available dates for your Orientation are still pending. Details and dates for your term will be available for sign up in February 2025 on your my.fiu.edu portal. There will be dates for transfer students starting in April through June.

Fall 2025 Admitted Students (Classes start August 25)

The available dates for your Orientation are still pending. Details and dates for your term will be available for sign up in February 2025 on your my.fiu.edu portal. There will be dates for transfer students starting in June through August.

Completing Orientation

24 hours after you've paid your $200 tuition deposit or have had it waived, log into your my.fiu.edu account, click the Orientation tile. Here you will see more information and be connected to the portal to begin your Virtual Orientation. Upon completion, you will be charged $35.

Follow these suggestions to successfully complete your Virtual Orientation:

  • Any pop-up blockers within your Internet browser must be turned off in order to access the Virtual Orientation.
  • Let all videos play through on their own...if you try to skip ahead, it will not let you continue.
  • You can stop and restart where you left off by going back to the link in your MyFIU account.
  • Stay active within the Virtual Orientation to ensure that you don't time out of the system and lose your progress.
  • If you've followed these suggestions, but are still having technical difficulties, send an email with your name, Panther ID, a detailed description of the problem and any relevant screen shots to orient@fiu.edu for assistance.

Next Steps to Register for Classes Per School/College - Spring 2025

Please review the directions and next steps below for your designated school/college on how to register for courses for the Spring 2025 semester should your major have no Orientation dates available.

  • College of Arts, Sciences & Education (CASE)

    The College of Arts, Sciences & Education will be offering a virtual drop-in advising session on Friday, January  3, 2025 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm to assist new transfer students. The appointment sessions will be limited to 10 minutes and the Zoom room will be closed once we have met capacity.

    After January 3, students can contact their advisor most effectively via FIU’s Panther Success Network (PSN) to make an appointment, get advised for classes, and to remove your Advising hold. Visit go.fiu.edu/psn to schedule an your appointment.

    For an optimal experience, we recommend using the latest versions of either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. For step-by-step instructions on how to access and use PSN, please download the student manual.

    Students can call CASE Advising at 305-348-2978 for additional assistance and troubleshooting. Please allow a 24-to-48-hour response time. 

  • College of Business (COB)

    The College of Business will be offering a virtual drop-in advising session on Friday, January 3, 2025 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm to assist new transfer students (only BBA majors, no Accounting majors). 

    After January 3, students can contact their advisor most effectively via FIU’s Panther Success Network (PSN) to make an appointment, get advised for classes, and to remove your Advising hold. Visit go.fiu.edu/psn to schedule an your appointment.

  • College of Engineering & Computing (CEC)

    Students should contact their respective advisors for an appointment. Visit go.fiu.edu/psn to schedule an your appointment.

  • Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS)

    The School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS) will be offering virtual walk-in advising session on January 3, 2025 from 1:00 - 5:00 PM to assist new transfer students to get registered for classes. 

    After January 3, students can contact their advisor most effectively via FIU’s Panther Success Network (PSN) to make an appointment, get advised for classes, and to remove your Advising hold. Visit go.fiu.edu/psn to schedule an your appointment.

  • Robert Stemple College of Public Health & Social Work (PHSW)

  • Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs (SIPA)

    The School of International & Public Affairs (SIPA) will be offering virtual walk-in advising session on January 2, 2025 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM to assist new transfer students to get registered for classes. 

    After January 2, students can contact their advisor most effectively via FIU’s Panther Success Network (PSN) to make an appointment, get advised for classes, and to remove your Advising hold. Visit go.fiu.edu/psn to schedule an your appointment.

  • Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM)

    Transfer students in the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) will need to call 305-919-4521 to set up time with Advising staff directly in order to register for classes.

  • Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences (CNHS)

    Students should contact their respective advisors for an appointment. Visit go.fiu.edu/psn to schedule an your appointment.

  • College of Communication, Architecture, and the Arts (CARTA)

    Students should contact their respective advisors for an appointment. Visit go.fiu.edu/psn to schedule an your appointment.

Pre-Orientation Checklist

Get prepared before attending Orientation. Follow the steps below to ensure a smooth transition to FIU!

  • Resolve Holds

    Check your “Tasks” tile in MyFIU for any of the holds. Holds must be resolved before attending orientation.

    • The Orientation Hold will be removed once you fully attend and complete our program.
    • Your Academic Advisor will remove the New Transfer Student (TRS)/New Online Transfer Student (OLT) registration hold at your Advising and Registration appointment. After your advising session and once all holds are resolved, you will be able to enroll for your first semester of classes. 
    • Immunizations Hold for health compliance records.
      • Review FIU’s immunization requirements, and submit all necessary documents/waivers to immune@fiu.edu. Processing time is 24-48 business hours.
      • Did you grow up or attend school in the state of Florida? You have records on file with the Florida Department of Health Immunization Registry, also known as Florida SHOTS. If you would like FIU to search for your records in the registry, please complete this consent form.
      • If you need assistance with Immunization holds, contact Health Compliance via email at immune@fiu.edu.
      • Previous schools may not transfer this information.
    • Admissions Hold for undetermined residency
      • If you have an Admissions/Residency hold, additional details about requirements can be found on the OneStop Enrollment Services website.
      • Using Web Upload through your MyFIU is the preferred method to submit your initial residency documents. To do so:
        1. Follow instructions to Submit Forms Online
        2. Choose department: Admissions
        3. Choose form name: Residency Docs Florida (Initial)
        4. Upload your documents and save

  • Financial Aid

    Financial aid processes are often aligned with specific academic terms. There are distinct timelines for early fall, fall, and spring semesters, each requiring a separate application to ensure timely disbursement of funds. Please see below for more information:

    1. Complete your 23/24 FAFSA (Summer A/C & Summer B 2024) and your 24/25 FASFA (Fall 2024, Spring 2025) at FAFSA.gov and include FIU School Code 009635.
    2. Visit your my.fiu.edu to check your Tasks tile for any pending Financial Aid items.
    3. If you have been selected for verification, click on the Federal Verification Link; all verification documents must be submitted via ProVerify.
    4. Your financial aid will not be processed until verification is completed.
    5. For questions or additional assistance with Financial Aid, contact 305-348-7272. 
  • Mandatory – Submit Official Records/Transcripts

    Submit ALL final official transcripts from any college or university you’ve attended along with advanced placement (AP),  CLEP, IB, or any other exam score. Visit Submit Transcripts for detailed instructions on how to submit all types of transcripts, foreign credits, etc. We encourage you to review your Transfer Credit Report through my.fiu.edu to confirm all your previous schools, AA degree (if applicable), and exam scores are listed. Please direct all questions to transfer@fiu.edu.

  • Mandatory – Upload photo for FIU OneCard

    You are required to upload your photo and government-issued ID to the FIU One Card Office prior to your Orientation date. You will be allowed to upload your photo closer to your orientation date and will receive a communication directly from One Card. Make sure you follow all directions, and that your photo meets all required criteria. Your FIU One Card will be distributed at Orientation. Visit our website onecard.fiu.edu or email onecard@fiu.edu with any questions.

  • Mandatory - Sign up for your Advising and Registration Day!

    Academic Advising and class registration will not be completed at Transfer Orientation. Academic advising and class registration information can be found in your MY.FIU account under the Orientation dashboard. Your academic advisor will remove the New Transfer Student (TRS)/OLT (New Online Transfer Student) registration hold so that you can then register for your classes.

  • Access your FIU Student Email
    • All fully admitted students at FIU have access to their own personal FIU email account through Microsoft 365.
    • To log in to your email, visit fiu.edu and type in your FIU username (the first part of your FIU email account, ex. rpant065) and password, which is the same as your MyFIU password. If you cannot access your FIU student e-mail or are having issues logging in, contact our Division of IT at (305) 348-2284.

  • International students (on J1/F1 Visas)
    1. You are required to have health insurance. An Insurance Hold will be placed on your account until proof of insurance is shown.
      • More information about health insurance requirements can be found on the Health Compliance website.
      • If you need assistance with an Insurance Hold, contact Health Compliance via email at insure@fiu.edu, phone 305-348-2688 or fax 305-348-3336 from 9am - 5pm, Monday through Friday.
      • Processing time to 24-48 business hours.
    2. Ensure that you’ve completed the Declaration Certification of Finances Form to register for your classes. For assistance, email iadmiss@fiu.edu.
    3. You are required to attend an International Student Services Session conducted by the Office of International Student and Scholar Services(ISSS).
  • Arrange for Housing

    On-campus housing fills up quickly, so apply early! Visit the Housing & Residential Experience website and sign a housing agreement today!

  • Sign Up for Panther Camp!

    Panther Camp provides incoming FIU students with the opportunity to transition to FIU in an exciting and engaging way! Meet new students, create lasting memories, and get ready to embark on a new journey at FIU. Sign up today!

  • Orientation Payment

    All outstanding orientation charges must be paid in full prior to attending your scheduled session.

Post-Orientation Checklist

After attending Orientation, complete your post-Orientation checklist in order to have a successful first semester!

  • Get your Virtual Parking Permit!

    A student virtual parking permit is available to each student who is currently enrolled and would like to park a vehicle on campus. After you've signed up for your classes, be sure to register your vehicle by logging into your parking portal with your FIU student credentials. Please click on "My Parking Account" to begin registering your vehicle. 

     

  • Complete a Canvas Training

    Canvas is the learning management system (LMS) which hosts the very courses you will take at the university and gives you access to course materials and tools to communicate and collaborate with classmates, instructors and/or Teaching Assistants (TA's). Complete a Canvas training to help you get started!

  • Get your FIU gear and textbooks for your courses!

    Get your FIU gear from the FIU Barnes & Noble Bookstore and receive your textbooks through the Panther Book Pack program.  The Panther Book Pack program gives you convenient access to all of your course materials.

    The Panther Book Pack is an affordable course materials rental program providing all undergraduate students with their required course materials by the first day of class at a fixed rate of $20 per credit hour. Learn more about the Panther Book Pack program here

  • Complete the Hazing Prevention Training

    All students in the State University System of Florida are asked to complete the “Hazing Prevention 101” training. For FIU students, this course should be completed within their first year of enrollment at FIU. All new students will be automatically enrolled in the course after the add/drop date of their first semester, and the reminder will be added to your To-Do List.

    Once enrolled, you will go to https://develop.fiu.edu and log into your student dashboard to complete the course. [Please note that student-athletes and members of Fraternity & Sorority Life organizations are required to also complete a supplementary course within their first semester of membership.]

    To report hazing during your time at FIU, please visit report.fiu.edu.

  • Complete the Sexual Assault Prevention Training

    All FIU students are REQUIRED to complete this course within their first semester of enrollment. All new students will be automatically enrolled in the course after the add/drop date of their first semester, and the reminder will be added to your To-Do List. Once enrolled, you will go to https://develop.fiu.edu and log into your student dashboard to complete the course. 

    Non-completion of the course will result in a registration hold.

  • Optional - Schedule a Welcome Appointment with the Disability Resource Center

    Ensure a smooth transition to your academic journey by scheduling a Welcome Appointment with the Disability Resource Center. This personalized meeting will allow you to discuss and implement necessary accommodations, ensuring a supportive and inclusive learning environment tailored to your needs.
