Advising and Registration Day

Incoming Students Only

Welcome to FIU! As a new member of our Panther family, we want to make sure you have the resources to start off on the right paw!

What is an Advising and Registration Day?

The Advising and Registration Day is a mandatory academic advising session for incoming First-Year and Transfer students. On this day, you will meet with academic advisors from your school or college and will have a short one-on-one advising session (10-15 minutes) to discuss your enrollment for the upcoming term, as well as the potential credits you are bringing in, and to answer any other general advising questions you may have. This session is also when your academic advisor will lift your First Time Student/Transfer Student Hold at the end of your advising session so that you can enroll in your courses immediately after. Please set aside 2-3 hours for your advising session.

How do I register for my Advising & Registration Day?

First Year Students

To register for your Advising and Registration day, which will be your first meeting with an advisor, you must have completed your Virtual Orientation (VO), filled in your College Credit Earned (CCE) form, and selected an in-person Orientation date (ORN). Once you have completed these steps, click on the “Advising and Registration RSVP” tile. Inside this tile, you will be able to select the date for your Advising and Registration Day. Be mindful of the location when selecting a date – most are on Zoom, however, some will be in person at MMC.

If you are a fully online student, you will not be required to register for an in-person Orientation date before registering for your Advising and Registration Day.

Once you are registered and it is closer to your selected Advising and Registration Day, you will receive an email indicating the time block you have been assigned.

If you would like to modify your Advising and Registration date, please return to the tile to do so. You will only be able to reschedule until the day before your selected date. The link for your Advising and Registration Day will be available in your MyFIU Account in your Advising and Registration Day RSVP tile.

Transfer Students

To register for your first meeting with an advisor, you must have completed your Virtual Orientation (VO) before clicking on the “Advising and Registration RSVP” tile. Once you are in the tile, you will be able to select the date for your Orientation Day and Advising and Registration Day. All Transfer Advising and Registration Days will be held remotely via Zoom.

Fully online students are not required to select an Orientation Day.

If you would like to modify your Advising and Registration date, please return to the tile to do so. You will only be able to reschedule until the day before your selected date.

The link for your Advising and Registration Day will be available in your MyFIU Account in your Advising and Registration Day RSVP tile.

To-Do’s for your Advising and Registration Day

Day of Advising Resources and Expectations

Your Advising and Registration Day will be a condensed advising session, during which you will meet with an advisor from your department and, together, you will plan classes for your first semesters as an FIU Panther. If you are a First Year Student, the CCE is crucial in this process, as we want to make sure that you only register for courses you need - and those you haven't taken already. Please complete your CCE form as accurately as possible. The CCE form is available in your myFIU within the Orientation tile and will be available once you complete your Virtual Orientation.

  • Make sure you have a laptop/PC available - your phone is too small to see the great things your advisor will share with you.
  • Make sure to check that the audio and video are working.
  • Find a quiet room where you can focus on your academic advising session.
  • Helpful Things to Do While Waiting to Meet with Your Advisor:
    • Review and watch videos from the Academics Module in your Virtual Orientation - Pay Special Attention to "UCC, " "Major Maps" and "Panther Degree Audit."
    • Review Major Maps at https://mymajor.fiu.edu
    • Search for and place courses in the shopping cart for your upcoming term(s)
    • If available, have accelerated credit or dual enrollment information ready to review with the advisor.
  • You will need to authenticate before using Zoom for Advising and Registration. Read more about Using Zoom as an FIU Panther
