Calculus Readiness Workshops

The Center for Academic Success (CfAS) will be offering calculus readiness workshops to students who plan on taking calculus for their degree program. These workshops are designed primarily for students in STEM majors, and need a review to gain a solid foundation for Calculus 1 (MAC2311).

Workshop Expectations

  1. Be prepared. Bring your textbook, syllabus, laptop and any pertinent materials related to the pace of the course.
  2. Be on time. Sessions are one hour in length. The tutors need all of this time in order to provide each participant with the necessary attention and detail to his/her progress.
  3. Be responsible. Once you register for a workshop at the Center for Academic Success (CfAS) you are reserving a place that no other student can take. Be considerate with these workshops. Keep your Panther ID handy when you arrive. You must enter your information at the front area of the center. Make sure that your tutor records your attendance. At the end of the semester these records will be submitted to your professor.

Calculus Readiness Workshop Syllabus

  • Session #1: Algebraic Manipulation

Use of order of operations, the distributive property, cross multiplication, rules of exponents, and rules of radicals to isolate variables and solve equations of one variable and of multiple variables.

  • Session #2: Factoring

Use of the greatest common factor, grouping, difference of two squares, sum and difference of two cubes, and other methods of factoring trinomials and use of the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations.

  • Session #3: Functions and Graphing (Part 1)

An introduction to functions and their properties, how to find the domain and range of functions, and common types of functions.

  • Session #4: Functions and Graphing (Part 2)

How to graph many of the more common types of functions prevalent in calculus.

  • Session #5: Logarithms and Exponentials

Use of the definitions and properties of logarithms and exponentials to simplify expressions and solve equations involving logarithms and/or exponentials.

  • Session #6: Trigonometry
Conversions between degrees and radians, coterminal and reference angles, the unit circle, sine and cosine graphs, right triangle trigonometry, and trigonometric identities and inverse functions.
  • Session #7: Math Literacy
Use of chunking reading strategies to comprehend and solve word problems and improve problem-solving skills.

Students are welcome to attend as many workshops as they like!  Workshops will be available throughout the week.  A few topics will take more than one week to review.
