Calculus I Recitation

The Center for Academic Success (CfAS) offers weekly recitation sessions for Calculus I (MAC 2311) and Calculus I for Engineers (MAC 2281). These sessions are led by trained tutors who have been vetted by the Calculus faculty and focus on reinforcing key concepts through guided problem-solving.

Calculus faculty collaborate with CfAS to design worksheets that align with course content. Each week covers a different worksheet; please see the workshop syllabus below for details.

Students may attend by dropping in at CfAS (GL 120) or by reserving a spot through the Panther Tutoring Network (PTN). Some instructors offer course credit for attending recitations—check with your professor for specific requirements.

  • Workshop Expectations
    1. Be prepared. Bring your notes, syllabus, and any pertinent materials related to your class. Any forms of research material are extremely helpful.
    2. Be on time. Sessions are one hour in length. While workshops consist of a maximum of 10 students, our tutors need all of this time in order to provide each participant with the necessary attention and detail to his/her progress.
    3. Be consistent. Your professor may provide an extra credit incentive. In order to receive the possible extra credit, be consistent in your session attendance. If you register for a session but do not attend, your spot in the session will be reopened to other students.
    4. Be receptive. You will receive a variety of strategies, organizers, handouts, and study rubrics throughout the sessions. Keep these in your ‘metacognitive bank’ and ask your tutor questions. You are also expected to participate in the sessions via working with other students/the tutor/responding to surveys sent by CfAS.
    5. Be responsible. Keep your Panther ID handy when you arrive to the center. You must enter your information at the front area of our center, and make sure that your tutor records your attendance. At the end of the semester these records will be submitted to your professor after completion of the end of semester survey.

    Calculus 1 Recitation Workshop Syllabus

    • Week 1: Algebra/Precalculus Review and Introduction to Limits
      • Strengthen essential algebra, trigonometry, and function concepts needed for success in Calculus I. Begin exploring limits and their role as the foundation of calculus.
    • Week 2: Computing Limits and Infinite Limits
      • Practice evaluating limits graphically, numerically, and analytically. Explore infinite limits and develop strategies for handling challenging limit problems.
    • Week 3: Continuity and Introduction to Derivatives
      • Connect limits to continuity and discover the derivative as a measure of instantaneous rate of change. Practice finding derivatives from first principles.
    • Week 4: Differentiation Rules
      • Build proficiency with power, product, quotient, and basic differentiation rules. Focus on computational fluency and interpretation of derivative results.
    • Week 5: Derivatives of Trigonometric Functions
      • Review material from limits through differentiation while learning derivatives of trigonometric functions and their applications.
    • Week 6: Chain Rule and Implicit Differentiation
      • Master the Chain Rule for composite functions and learn how implicit differentiation can be used to find derivatives of relationships not given explicitly.
    • Week 7: Logarithmic, Exponential, and Inverse Function Derivatives
      • Extend differentiation techniques to logarithmic, exponential, and inverse functions while reinforcing previously learned derivative rules.
    • Week 8: Related Rates
      • Apply derivatives to real-world situations by solving related rates problems involving changing quantities and geometric relationships.
    • Week 9: Maximums, Minimums, and the Mean Value Theorem
      • Learn how derivatives can identify extrema and explore the important consequences of the Mean Value Theorem.
    • Week 10: Curve Sketching and Graph Analysis
      • Discover what derivatives reveal about the behavior of functions. Use first and second derivatives to analyze increasing/decreasing intervals, concavity, and inflection points.
    • Week 11: Optimization and Linear Approximation
      • Use calculus to solve optimization problems and learn how linear approximations provide useful estimates for complicated functions.
    • Week 12: L'Hôpital's Rule and Antiderivatives
      • Explore indeterminate forms and learn how L'Hôpital's Rule can simplify difficult limits. Begin the study of antiderivatives and indefinite integrals.
    • Week 13: Integration and Substitution
      • Develop techniques for finding antiderivatives and practice substitution methods that connect differentiation and integration.
    • Week 14: Definite Integrals
      • Investigate the concept of accumulated area through definite integrals and their applications.
    • Week 15: Final Exam Review
      • Prepare for the cumulative final exam by reviewing limits, derivatives, applications of differentiation, antiderivatives, and definite integrals.

On the PTN dashboard, navigate to the scheduling widget, select 'Workshops' for Center, and fill out the appropriate Subject and Reason. Then Search and select an available time that interests you.

1. Please log into your MyFIU account and access the Panther Tutoring Network

2. Once in your student dashboard, go to the schedule appointment section. Click on the "Choose a center" drop-down menu and seclect "Workshops".

3. Next, use the drop-down menu for course selection to pick "MAC2311." Then, under the "Reason for Appointment" option, select "Workshop" again.

4. After selecting workshops you will see a list of optons to choose from. Then Pick your Workshop.

5. You will now see the schedule of our available workshops. Select the time and date that work best for you, and submit your choice.
