The goal is to provide all panthers with the resources and support they need to reach their fullest potential here at FIU and beyond. We accomplish this through:
Our knowledgeable staff continually engages in research and evaluation, professional development opportunities, and on- and off-campus partnership-building. Through our Safe Zone Training, we offer valuable resources to educate faculty, staff, and students on diverse topics centering gender, orientation, and their intersections with other identities and experiences.
Our summer Pride Leaders Program (PLP) develops student's leadership skills that they apply to improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ people through their roles as students, as future professionals in their various careers, and as civically engaged members of our democracy.
We also fund students who wish to attend the LGBTQ Task Force's Creating Change Conference each year. Creating Change is the foremost leadership and skills-building conference for LGBTQIA+ social justice.
FIU Panthers can join our Social Justice Badge Program to learn ways to advocate for our community, request Programs on Demand (e.g., Gender Pronoun Use), and attain resources directly from the student organizations we advise. Additionally, our Safe Zone program provides training for an average of 250 faculty and staff annually who volunteer as LGBTQIA+ advocates.
We are committed to ensuring all students succeed here at FIU and beyond. This means listening to students' needs and working alongside them to develop the policies and spaces that impact them. We provide resources, support, and opportunities that empower students to become effective self-advocates.
Have you seen our Gender Inclusive Restrooms List? We help advocate for more inclusive facilities across campus.
Did you know FIU has Gender Inclusive Housing and Pride Floors? These are application-based when signing up for housing at FIU. Learn more via Housing and Residential Life.
Our LGBTQA+ Mentorship Program trains faculty, staff, and graduate student volunteers to serve as advocates, guides, and role models in the positive development of students’ academic and non-academic lives.
We empower and advise the Pride Student Union, a bureau under the Student Government Association, in representing and advocating for student interests on campus.
If there is something our office cannot immediately provide, we refer students to Health and Wellness services (e.g., PanthersCare, Fostering Panther Pride, CAPS/VEP, and Financial Aid) and follow up to ensure their needs were met.
We work to establish a strong sense of belonging to FIU among our LGBTQIA+ students through the celebration of who they are and what they accomplish. We do this through scholarships, organizing and participating in events like Miami Beach Pride, and holding a special Lavender Graduation ceremony to honor our LGBTQIA+ graduates each semester.
Our office is a community effort. We encourage you to submit your ideas and get involved in our office. Please reach out to us at pridecenter@fiu.edu.
