  • Individual and couples counseling

CAPS offers individual counseling to those students with concerns appropriate to be treated in a brief psychotherapy model.

Couples who are both registered FIU students may be seen at CAPS for couples counseling.

  • Testing

CAPS offers screenings for ADHD and ASD as well as comprehensive psycho-educational testing services for students with possible ADHD and/ or learning disorders, and other medical or psychiatric conditions negatively affecting academic performance.

Your clinician may refer you to our wait list for an assessment to further evaluate your concerns. We currently offer the following assessments:

    • Testing consultation (1 hr. session): a testing consultation to find out whether a full psycho-educational evaluation or a screen would be helpful for you. Testing consultations are free of charge.
    • ADHD screen (90 min session followed by a 30 min feedback session): an assessment to help differentiate whether attention deficit symptoms are due to ADHD or most likely caused by another psychiatric condition (anxiety, depression, substance use). The screen will not necessarily result in a formal diagnosis but rather provide treatment recommendations and whether further investigation by a specialist is warranted. (Fee Assessed)
    • ASD screen (90 min session followed by a 1hr feedback session): an assessment to evaluate for autism through comprehensive and in-depth interviews and ASD screening tools. The screen will not necessarily result in a formal diagnosis but rather provide treatment recommendations and whether further investigation by a specialist is warranted. (Fee Assessed)
    • Psychoeducational evaluation (3 sessions, each 2 to 3 hrs. long): will assess your strengths and weaknesses and will determine the presence of ADHD, learning disorders, or other mental health conditions. It also provides you with a diagnosis and meaningful recommendations regarding necessary accommodations that will help you pursue your academic goals. (Fee Assessed)

For fee information please visit the Student Health Fee page and see Counseling and Psychological Services fees under “Other Services”.

  • Trauma and victimization

The Victim Empowerment Program specializes in working with students who have experienced threatened or actual violence.
