Student Health Fee

What is the student health fee?

The health fee is a mandatory part of tuition that helps provide affordable, high-quality care and mental health services right on campus. It covers services from the following departments: Student Health Clinics (SHC), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Victim Empowerment Program (VEP), Healthy Living Program (HLP), and the Disability Resource Center (DRC).

Thanks to the health fee, students can access services such as:

  • Primary Health Care
  • Health education and workshops
  • Class presentations and health fairs
  • Support and accommodations for disabilities
  • Mental health counseling
  • Help for victims of emotional or physical abuse

These services are offered free or at a lower cost due to funding from the health fee.

Frequently asked questions

  • What payment methods are accepted?

    You may pay by:

    • Cash
    • Credit card
    • Debit card
    • Check
    • Transfer to your university account (One Card)

Most services are covered at 100% with no co-pay if you are currently enrolled in the school-sponsored insurance plan. These services are a list of the most frequently used services. For additional services, please call the Student Health Center departments directly.

  • Does everyone pay the health fee? Who is exempt?

The health fee is a mandatory fee charged to degree-seeking students as part of their tuition each semester. This includes Global First Year (G1Y) and Transient students.

For students on tuition waivers, please refer to the OneStop tuition waiver to learn more about payment and eligibility requirements.

  • How much is the health fee?

The health fee is currently $93.69 per semester.

  • What if students do not have any insurance?

FIU is committed to keeping all students healthy whether they have insurance or not. Students who pay the health fee have access to the Student Health Clinics, medical providers, the Healthy Living Program, and all other programs and services covered by the health fee. For these students, the health fee will continue to subsidize the cost of office visits, routine medical exams for illness or injury, medical consultations, family planning consultations, health education, screening for high blood pressure and other conditions, thereby lowering or eliminating the direct cost to students. Any services (such as laboratory testing, medications, vaccines) performed outside of these are available at nominal fees.

  • Which services will be covered 100% by the health fee, for students without insurance?

For students who do not have insurance, the health fee offsets the cost of office visits, routine medical exams for illness or injury, medical consultations, family planning consultations, health education, screening for high blood pressure, and other conditions at the clinics.

  • Which services will not be covered by the health fee, for students without insurance?

Services not covered by the health fee include vaccines, lab tests (such as testing for strep, blood counts, mono, pregnancy, cholesterol, and urinalysis), pap smears, STD testing, EKGs, TB screenings, medications (prescription, injection, and over-the-counter), immunizations (such as measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis, and HPV) and other diagnostic testing and sub-specialty office visits.

If you have further questions, concerns, or want additional information, you may contact a Student Health Clinics Patient Advocate at the following numbers:

    • Modesto Maidique Campus: 305-348-0331
    • Biscayne Bay Campus: 305-919-4811

Additional Costs and Insurance Information

The Student Health Clinics only accept the school-sponsored insurance plan, Academic Health Plan (Aetna). However, students with other insurance or no insurance can still receive care at the clinic. The health fee covers office visits, medical exams for illness or injury, medical consultations, contraceptive consultations, health education, and screenings for conditions like high blood pressure.

For services not covered by the health fee—such as vaccines, lab tests (e.g., strep, blood counts, pregnancy), pap smears, STD testing, TB screenings, medications, and immunizations—there is a low cost. You can find some of the most common procedures and their associated fees in the list below.

Our clinic is funded by the health fee, which enables us to provide a wide range of essential services to meet the needs of our patients. However, to maintain affordability and ensure the availability of these services, we must operate within certain limitations. Please note that we do not offer radiology or X-ray services, EKGs, or specialized care beyond our scope. If your condition requires services outside of what we can provide, we will facilitate a referral to an appropriate specialist to ensure you receive the care you need.

  • Behavioral Health
    • ADHD screening - $ 50.00
      • At Student Health Clinic (SHC): At the SHC, you’ll go through a diagnostic process to determine if you have ADHD. This starts with completing questionnaires and taking a computerized screening during your first visit. Then, you’ll meet with a psychiatrist to review your history, screening results, and questionnaires. If you’re diagnosed with ADHD, the psychiatrist can prescribe medication and work with you on a treatment plan to support your success.
      • At Counseling & Psychological Services Center (CAPS): If you’re unsure whether your attention difficulties are due to ADHD or something else, like anxiety, depression, or substance use, CAPS offers a helpful screening process. This includes a 90-minute session followed by a 30-minute feedback meeting to discuss results. While this screening doesn’t provide a formal diagnosis, it offers recommendations for treatment or further evaluation. CAPS can also conduct additional testing to assess learning disorders if needed.
    • No show fee - $ 25.00
