A first-gen graduate proudly walks across the stage during FIU’s commencement ceremony.
It's First-Generation Celebration Week at FIU! First-generation college students are a vital part of the FIU community, bringing resilience, drive, and fresh perspectives that shape the future of the university, the workforce, and the South Florida community.
And you’ve come to the right place: About one-third of FIU undergraduate students are among the first generation in their families to pursue bachelor’s degrees – and FIU offers a wide range of academic, career development and financial support services to ensure they thrive on the path to the commencement stage. In fact, for its commitment to the success of these trailblazing students, FIU is designated a Champion campus by the FirstGen Forward Network, a recognition held by fewer than 40 institutions nationwide.
“First-generation students are forging bold, new traditions and navigating unfamiliar territory with courage,” said Jeannette Cruz, Ed.D., Senior Director of Student Access & Success and curator of First-Generation Initiatives at FIU. “At FIU, we understand that being the first in your family to attend college can come an added sense of responsibility and a lot of question. We are firmly committed to supporting these students’ needs throughout the academic journey as they prepare for meaningful careers after graduation.”
Here are six ways to make the most of your experience as a first-generation Panther:
1. Own your story… and use it as fuel.
Being the first to do something in your family is not a shortfall; it’s a blueprint. The values, responsibilities and experiences you carry make you adaptable, determined and resourceful. Remember: you bring a lot to the table. The more you recognize your strengths, the more confident you'll feel navigating college life. At FIU, being first-gen isn’t just recognized, it’s celebrated.
2. Connect with the Office of Student Access & Success
The Office of Student Access & Success is here for you every step of the way. From one-on-one academic support to workshops and community-building programs, SAS is your go-to resource for guidance, mentorship, and a supportive network of fellow first-gen students. They also offer services tailored for students balancing school with work, caregiving or other responsibilities. Register with SAS to gain access to dedicated study facilities, TRIO Student Support Services and other federal funded programs designed to assist first-gen, and much more.
3. Seek out scholarships – there are so many specifically geared toward first-gen students!
The First-Generation Scholarship Program at FIU offers numerous scholarships geared specifically toward you – don’t miss out. Application deadlines vary throughout the academic year; explore your options on FIU AcademicWorks now. Whether you’re in STEM, the arts, business, or education, there’s likely funding to support your goals.
4. Speak multiple languages? That’s an asset!
If you speak more than one language, you possess an important asset, especially in Miami. Bilingualism is a strength in the classroom, in leadership roles, and on your resume. It helps you build relationships across cultures, connect with your community, and stand out to future employers. Embrace it. Use it. It’s part of what makes you uniquely prepared to lead in a global city.
5. Build your circle: peers, mentors, professors
College success is a team effort. Whether it’s a study group, a favorite professor, or a campus advisor, relationships matter. Across the university, our faculty and staff have made a commitment to helping first-generation students thrive. Don’t be afraid to ask your professors or advisors questions. Join one of more than 200 affinity- and interest-based student organizations on campus. Attend events hosted by SAS and FIU First-Generation Initiatives. At FIU, you’ll find people who understand your journey and who genuinely want to see you succeed.
6. Plan for the finish line (even if it feels far away)
Graduation may feel like a lifetime away, but every decision you make now helps shape that moment and what comes afterward. Explore internships, research programs, and leadership opportunities early on. Visit FIU Career and Talent Development to start exploring options in your field of interest. You’re not just here to get a degree – you’re here to launch a life that reflects your values, your talents and your vision.
Final Word: First-gen students are leaders by example. You’ve already made a bold choice by stepping onto this campus, and you have everything it takes to thrive here. FIU is committed to ensuring you don’t just survive college – you own it.
