Right before Thanksgiving break, 200+ FIU students, staff, and supporters gathered for the annual Turkey & Toast Luncheon, hosted by the FIU Fostering Panther Pride (FPP) program. This special event, led by Director Ana Ramos, was more than a meal—it was a celebration of generosity, resilience, and the power of community.
Guests enjoyed delicious food, meaningful networking, and an inspiring keynote from FPP participant, Shatera Coleman, who shared her journey and the impact of support systems on student success. Ms. Coleman will graduate in Spring 2026 and currently holds an internship position with Bank United, an FPP sponsor. The luncheon served as a reminder of why programs like FPP are essential to FIU’s mission.

About Fostering Panther Pride
For most FIU students, challenges include finding parking, getting to class on time, and balancing work and school. But for some, the obstacles are far greater—homelessness or aging out of foster care. Without a support system or financial foundation, earning a degree can feel impossible.
Recognizing this need, FIU launched Fostering Panther Pride in 2014 to provide customized services that empower these students to succeed and graduate. The program offers housing assistance, job placement, academic advising, and mentoring opportunities—creating a pathway to stability and success.
Thanks to the generosity of donors and partners, FPP continues to transform lives.
Why It Matters
When students are given opportunities and a network that believes in them, they rise to the challenge. The Turkey & Toast Luncheon is a testament to FIU’s commitment to supporting student success—and to the incredible resilience of our Panthers.
This year’s celebration also honored two individuals with Outstanding Advocate Awards for their unwavering commitment to Fostering Panther Pride students:
- Dr. Steve J. Rios, Head of Foster Care and Homeless Education Services at Educate Tomorrow
- Andrew Naylor, Senior Director of FIU Housing and Residential Services
FPP Director Ana Ramos presented FIU Housing and Residential Experience Senior Director Andrew Naylor with the Outstanding Advocate Award.
Their advocacy ensures that students facing the greatest challenges have the resources and support they need to thrive.
