Education Benefits

The Office of Veteran and Military Affairs is here to help you understand the education benefits you have access to through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense and the state of Florida. Click the links below to learn more about how these benefits work at FIU.

Getting Started With Your Benefits

In accordance with Title 38 US Code § 3679 subsections (e), FIU adopts the following additional provisions for any students using U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Ch. 33) or Veteran Readiness and Employment Service (Ch. 31) benefits, while payment to the institution is pending from the VA. FIU will not:

  • Prevent the student’s enrollment
  • Assess a late penalty fee to the student
  • Require the student to secure alternative or additional funding
  • Deny the student access to any resources (access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities) available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fee bills to the institution

However, to qualify for this provision, FIU veteran and military-affiliated students will be required to complete the following steps:

Step 1: Apply for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE).

First time? You can apply for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) via the VA website.  When you receive your COE, please email a PDF copy to veterans@fiu.edu.

Transferring? You can transfer your benefits to FIU by filling out the VA form on the VA GI Bill website and email it to veterans@fiu.edu.

Tuition Assistance? Follow your branch instructions listed on the Department of Defense Military Tuition Assistance website. Additional information is available on our Tuition Assistance page.

National Guard? Educational Dollars for Duty info can be found here: Florida National Guard Educational Dollars for Duty

It is important that veteran and military-affiliated students include their full name and Panther ID number with their COE so our team can update your status. Providing the VMA with a copy of your VA Certification of Eligibility (COE) can also include a “Statement of Benefits” obtained from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) website. This can include eBenefits or an approval/acceptance letter for chapter 31 (VR&E).
