    The Collective is a monthly discussion series designed for Black-identified women to find community, conversation and capacity to navigate their lived collegiate experiences. Monthly conversations are held on Wednesdays from 2:00pm – 3:30pm at go.fiu.edu/virtualcollective

    La Colectiva is a monthly discussion series designed for Latinx femmes to find community, conversation, and capacity to navigate their lived collegiate experiences. La Colectiva is a space for Latinx women to have meaningful conversation, network, and build community.

Gender-based violence

  • Sexual Assault Awareness Month

    To promote awareness about the issues of sexual assault and intimate partner/gender-based violence on college campuses, the Women's Center and Victim Empowerment Program, together with many other university departments and student organizations, facilitate a series of events during the month of April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. 

  • Red Zone

    College students are in one of the most vulnerable age groups for sexual assault. Beginning when you first walk onto campus until Thanksgiving break is a time period is known as the “Red Zone” – a period of vulnerability for sexual assaults or attempted sexual assault. According to multiple studies, female students are at an increased risk for sexual assault during this time.

  • International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

    This day is dedicated to promote awareness of sexual assault, interpersonal violence, human trafficking, and violence on college campuses and beyond. The Women's Center at BBC, together with the International Education Week committee and student organizations, facilitate this annual event in observance of this day.

Empowerment

  • The Sisterhood Retreat

    A weekend of self-exploration, empowerment, bonding, and fun! Women who participate in this retreat will engage in activities of personal reflection and workshops designed to develop you as an individual, leader, and community member at FIU. 

Health & Body Positivity

  • Love Your Body Week

    The National Organization for Women (NOW) hosts "Love Our Bodies Day" each year. This year, the Women's Center is teaming up with the Wellness Center, SGA, NOW at FIU, and VOX to bring you a week of events to celebrate the wonders and mysteries of the female body and its many variations of beauty!

Generation Action

Through Generation Action, college students organize events on campus to raise public awareness about reproductive health and rights, and educate young people about sexual health. The FIU chapter of Generation Action works with and supports their local Planned Parenthood health centers, and mobilizes advocates of reproductive rights.   • To enable member states to hold the UN system accountable for its own commitments on gender equality, including regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Volunteering and internships

Internships are offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters at the Women’s Center in both the MMC and BBC Office under the guidance of the current Program Manager and Program Coordinator. If you are interested in interning with the Women's Center, please complete the intern application:

Women’s Center Intern Responsibilities:

Interns will work with Women’s Center staff to develop semester goals that will be implemented throughout the year.

Student Intern (5-10hrs)

  1. Requirements
    1. Perform all assignments (in class and at the internship) to the standards of the instructor and supervisor
    2. Notify the supervisor and instructor in advance of any unforeseen absences
    3. Abide by university regulations and policies, including the FIU Student Code of Conduct
    4. Hold harmless the intern site and university for any accidental injury occurring at the site not due to the intentional misconduct or negligence of the internship site’s agents and employees
    5. Assume responsibility for transportation to and from the internship
  2. Women’s Center Responsibilities
    1. Intern is responsible for completing all assignments and tasks given to them by Program Coordinator and Program Manager
    2. Interns will assist with event programming, marketing/promotions, social media, content creation, and student affairs tabling
    3. Intern will assist with content development and student affairs research when needed
    4. Intern will participate in daily operations, biweekly team meetings, and any additional shadowing opportunities as they become available
    5. Intern will be incorporated in a supportive & collaborative work environment that fosters individual and professional growth
