Work with Us

Practicum and Internships

The Disability Resource Center offers positions for graduate students looking to apply their educational backgrounds and gain practical experience working with students with disabilities.

Students will learn about different parts of the DRC, including access consultant appointments, accommodation strategies at FIU, and general operations that support students. Available positions include practicum, internships, and volunteer opportunities. On-site supervision is provided.

The number of credit hours awarded to the student depends on your program of study.

Research at DRC

We’re proud to collaborate with both internal and external researchers. If you’re conducting research and are interested in working with us, follow the guidelines below.

  • Research Policies
    • No more than three research requests will be approved per semester.
    • Only one study per specific population subtype will be approved each semester.
    • Priority is given to FIU professors working toward tenure and graduate students completing a thesis or dissertation.
    • Undergraduate students working on class research papers, research not tied to a grant or research not led by an FIU professor, may only interview DRC staff and access commonly available aggregate data from our yearly report.
    • There are no fees to conduct research at the DRC. Researchers must provide any tools, technology, data collection materials, subject compensation, parking or transportation fees, software or supplies at their own cost.
    • The DRC can provide general office supplies (pens, pencils, erasers, sticky notes, paper clips, basic calculators, etc.) and up to 15 sheets of paper per day for printing.
    • Researchers who do not live near FIU should note that on-campus housing is not available. Contact the DRC leadership team for assistance with housing or hotel recommendations.
    • In-person research is usually approved at either our Modesto Maidique Campus or Biscayne Bay Campus offices. The specific location will be decided with the researcher. Learn more about our FIU campuses and centers.
    • Access to our student population may be terminated at any time if deemed necessary.
  • Research Request Procedure

All requests must be submitted to the DRC before the semester begins, as data collection is expected to start then. Late requests may be accepted if procedural issues prevented timely submission. Submit requests by email to drc@fiu.edu, addressed to the DRC leadership team. The email subject line should include your name, the semester you plan to start data collection and the words Research Request.

For example: John Smith Fall 2018 Research Request

    All requests must include:

    • Approval from FIU’s Institutional Review Board (IRB).
    • All marketing materials (flyers, posters, email announcements) as PDF or JPEG files. Printed copies can be provided after approval.
    • IRB approval from your home institution if you’re an external researcher.
    • Specific details about the population you want the DRC to target in its announcement.
    • A copy of the informed consent form will be given to research subjects.
    • A copy of your research proposal, including surveys or questions you will use.
    • Details about any space, equipment or technology needed at DRC facilities.
    • If data collection will occur outside DRC campus offices, specify the location and allow extra time for coordination with other campus partners.
    • If conducting research in person at the DRC or FIU, include your tentative data collection schedule.
    • Please allow one to two weeks for review after submitting a complete request. A DRC leadership team member will contact you to coordinate your data collection.

Volunteer Opportunities

We welcome FIU volunteers who want to make a positive impact by supporting students with disabilities.

As a DRC volunteer, you will receive training to provide a variety of academic support services tailored to the needs of our students. These roles are essential to helping students succeed in their classes and campus life.

Some examples of the support student volunteers provide include:

  • Reading information to students with disabilities
  • Writing information for students with disabilities
  • Taking class notes for students with disabilities
  • Proctoring exams
  • Providing administrative and front desk support for students with disabilities

Becoming a DRC volunteer is easy! If you’re interested, email drc@fiu.edu or complete the DRC Volunteer Application.
