I am excited to welcome you to Florida International University. As an incoming student, I look forward to having you join us for your exchange. I anticipate that your experience here will be valuable and rewarding.

Below is an overview of the steps you must complete. Please note that it is your responsibility to become familiar with the information for incoming students and follow the instructions diligently, as it includes very important details.

Step 1: Send Documents

Incoming students must complete the following items by April 1st to secure their exchange with FIU:

  • NSE Placement Acceptance Form (PAF) 

    This form is submitted through your home school.

  • Unofficial Transcript From Home Institution

    This form may be submitted by student via email.

  • NSE Visiting Student Application

    Placement at the NSE conference assures your NSE acceptance into FIU; however, a Visiting Student Application must be completed in order to be issued a Panther ID number. Please indicate to the FIU-NSE Office if you have a previously assigned Panther ID number with FIU. An FIU admissions application is not necessary so please do not fill one out.

  • Immunization
    As a prerequisite to registration, FIU requires all students born after December 31, 1956 to present documented proof of immunity to:
    • MMR: Measles, Mumps, Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Meningitis

    This written document must be signed by a physician (M.D. or D.O.), a nurse practitioner or a registered nurse and stamped by the doctor’s office. Please mail or email this paperwork to the Student Health Services on either campus. FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES, A PANTHER ID NUMBER MUST BE INCLUDED ON THIS FORM. Phone calls from your physician are not acceptable.

  • Tax Compliance (International and Canadian Students Only)

    The FIU IRS Tax Compliance University Requirement is only for International (F-1 visa) and Canadian (J-1 visa) students only. Puerto Rican students are considered U.S citizens and need not apply.

    Prior to your NSE departure from FIU (during your exchange), you must schedule to meet with a Tax Compliance Representative at FIU in order to complete the Tax Compliance Forms.

    Please email tax@fiu.edu, including your name and Panther ID number to request an appointment with a representative. Please include “NATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE” in the subject line. FIU Tax Compliance Representatives are Mairelys Perez and Silvia Cole.

    All international and Canadian students participating in the FIU-NSE program must comply with the NRA tax compliance requirement.

    You are required to submit the following documents to the Tax Compliance office:

    • Copy of I-94 card
    • Copy of passport (if applicable)
    • Copy of visa - Foreign National Information Form
    • I-20 (for F-1 visa)
    • W-8 Ben form

Step 2: Complete Full Time Schedule

Fall 2023 registration should have been completed with a full-time schedule. Please be reminded that the NSE program requires full-time enrollment during each exchange term (minimum 12 credit hours per term).

If you are NOT enrolled FULL-TIME or if you have not yet enrolled at all, the registration system will remain available through August. Be reminded that course registration is based on availability. In the meantime, you should email the FIU-NSE office any courses that require pre-requisite verification/approval.

Note: International students must enroll full-time (12 credit hours) per term, limit to 3 credits online.

Step 3: Complete Requirements – August 1st

In order to secure your exchange with FIU for Fall 2023/Spring 2024, please email the following requirements to the FIU-NSE office by August 1, 2023:

  • Health Insurance: Domestic USA Students

    Domestic students from other US states must show that you are enrolled in a health insurance plan and that you will be covered while on exchange at FIU, is required. This may be a copy of an insurance card or a letter from an insurance carrier. Please send this information directly to the FIU-NSE office by August 1, 2023.

  • Health Insurance: Canadian Students

    If you are a Canadian student, please visit the Canadian Student page for specific instructions. Canadian students have additional health insurance requirements.

  • Health Insurance: International Students (F-1 visa)

    International Health Insurance:Students will not be able to register for courses without satisfying the following requirements with FIU: 

    International students (F-1 Visa)  must coordinate adequate proof of international health insurance by either of the two options

    1. Purchase alternative insurance coverage that complies with FIU requirements and with visa regulations. Alternative health insurance plans are listed on FIU’s Health Compliance website:FIU Approved Alternative Insurance Plans. Students must purchase the alternative insurance plan and work with the insurance provider directly. Finally, students must complete FIU's International Student Health Insurance 2023 - 2024 Compliance Form. This form should be completed by the insurance provider and sent to FIU Immunization. Contact FIU Health Compliance for assistance at 305-348-3336 or insure@fiu.edu. Fall 2023 dates for coverage: August 21, 2023 - December 9, 2023. 
    2. Purchase FIU’s International Health Insurance plan with Academic Health Plan (AHP) for Fall 2023- ONLY.    
      • The FIU Insurance office emailed all international students with the option to enroll in the Academic Health Plan. It was emailed to the FIU email. All international NSE students should have received this email -including you! Otherwise, please reach out to us. 
      • 2023 – 2024 International Health Insurance plan: FIU Student Sponsored Health Insurance Plan
  • Program Fee

    We have program events each term which will expose you to the exciting and beautiful South Florida region. There is a required non-refundable $85.00 charge for this whether you attend 1 or 2 terms at FIU. Payment link will be emailed directly to students. 

  • Waiver of Liability & Hold Harmless Form

    Sign, date and return the Waiver of Liability and Hold-Harmless Form directly to me. We must have this form on record for you in order for you to be eligible to participate in FIU/NSE activities.
