Standards & Safety

Every fraternity and sorority member is responsible for upholding the university’s core values of community, civility and accountability. For that reason, we provide several resources to address the challenges members might face on their road to becoming the leaders of tomorrow.

Hazing Prevention

FIU prohibits the condoning or conducting of any form of hazing. All organizations at FIU are held accountable for keeping their members safe and can face disciplinary sanctions or criminal liability under Florida state law for hazing activities.

Hazing is defined as any group or individual action that intends to inflict physical or mental harm or discomfort on any person, regardless of location, intent or consent of participants.

Examples of hazing include:

  • Forced consumption of food or other substances
  • Forced physical activity
  • Physical or verbal abuse

All fraternity and sorority members should visit our Hazing and Prevention page for a full overview of rules and penalties, as well as the university’s ongoing collaborative efforts to prevent hazing.

In addition, the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Enrichment provides educational experiences related to hazing prevention through participation in National Hazing Prevention Week and online modules related to hazing prevention and the efforts to mitigate hazing from occurring during any experience related to fraternity and sorority life.

Alcohol Awareness

To maintain a safe community, all chapter members must understand how to plan Greek events responsibly. The Center for Fraternity & Sorority Enrichment provides educational programming on alcohol and other drugs through in-person educational experiences and online modules.

All organizations must have up-to-date national organization policies related to social events/events with alcohol.

Open to Expansion

We’re excited to announce that we are open for expansion. The Recognition and Expansion Policy outlines the application procedures for recognition of a new or returning fraternity/sorority. Any organization that belongs to our governing councils is welcome to apply.
