Calculus II Recitation

The Center for Academic Success (CfAS) offers weekly recitation sessions for Calculus II (MAC 2312) and Calculus II for Engineers (MAC 2282). These sessions are led by trained tutors who have been vetted by the Calculus faculty and focus on reinforcing key concepts through guided problem-solving.

Calculus faculty collaborate with CfAS to design worksheets that align with course content. Each week covers a different worksheet; please see the workshop syllabus below for details.

Students may attend by dropping in at CfAS (GL 120) or by reserving a spot through the Panther Tutoring Network (PTN). Some instructors offer course credit for attending recitations—check with your professor for specific requirements.

For questions about the Calculus II or Calculus II for Engineers recitation sessions, please contact CfAS Math and Physics Coordinator Jared Banks at jarbanks@fiu.edu.

Monday, January 20th - Friday, April 16th
Note: Weekends are only offered remotely via Zoom.

  • Workshop Expectations
    1. Be prepared. Bring your notes, syllabus, and any pertinent materials related to your class. Any forms of research material are extremely helpful.
    2. Be on time. Sessions are one hour in length. While workshops consist of a maximum of 10 students, our tutors need all of this time in order to provide each participant with the necessary attention and detail to his/her progress.
    3. Be consistent. Your professor may provide an extra credit incentive. In order to receive the possible extra credit, be consistent in your session attendance. If you register for a session but do not attend, your spot in the session will be reopened to other students.
    4. Be receptive. You will receive a variety of strategies, organizers, handouts, and study rubrics throughout the sessions. Keep these in your ‘metacognitive bank’ and ask your tutor questions. You are also expected to participate in the sessions via working with other students/the tutor/responding to surveys sent by CfAS.
    5. Be responsible. Keep your Panther ID handy when you arrive to the center. You must enter your information at the front area of our center, and make sure that your tutor records your attendance. At the end of the semester these records will be submitted to your professor after completion of the end of semester survey.
  • Workshop Syllabus

    Calculus 2 Recitation Workshop Syllabus

    • Week 1: Calculus 1 Review and Riemann Sums
      • Prepare for Calculus II with some reinforcement of topics learned in Calculus I. Then, dive into the concept of Riemann Sums.
    • Week 2: Integrals and U-Sub
      • Get more practice with Integration and U-Substitution in this week's worksheet.
    • Week 3: U- Sub and Area between curves
      • Become more familiar with U-Substitution as you explore how to find the area between curves through integration.
    • Week 4: Solid Revolution
      • Extend the concept of area between curves to 3D! In this week's worksheet, tackle the disk/washer method and shells method of revolving solids.
    • Week 5: Surface Area, U - Sub, Solid Revolution
      • In this week's worksheet, review previous material as well as practicing surface area.
    • Week 6: Integration by Parts and Applications of Work
      • Practice the first of many integration techniques, integration by parts. Then, learn how integrals and Calculus II relate to the physical world with applications of work.
    • Week 7: Partial Fraction Decomposition with Integration
      • In this week's worksheet, review concepts from algebra like fraction decomposition and see how they can be used to help integration in Calculus II.
    • Week 8: Trigonometric Integrals and Trigonometric Sub
      • Become more familiar with trigonometric functions and their special properties pertaining to integration in this week's worksheet.
    • Week 9: Integration by Parts, Fraction Decomposition, Trigonometric Sub, Trigonometric Integrals
      • Review the integration techniques previously learned in this week's worksheet.
    • Week 10: Improper Integrals
      • Some integrals are not what they seem! Discover the importance of improper integrals within Calculus II in this week's worksheet.
    • Week 11: Sequences and Intro to Series
      • Get ready for sequences and how they relate to series in this week's worksheet.
    • Week 12: All Series Tests before Power Series
      • Become familiar with all of the series tests in this week's worksheet.
    • Week 13: Power Series (Taylor and MacLaurin)
      • Learn how to create a Taylor polynomial, Taylor Series and MacLaurin Series as well as finding interval of convergence in this week's worksheet.
    • Week 14: Polar Coordinates, Review for Final Exam
      • Prepare for your final exam with this week's review!
