Career and Talent Development (CTD) offers students many opportunities and programs to prepare for their job or internship search. From networking workshops, to professional dining etiquette, CTD is dedicated to preparing you for your next steps before and after graduation.

Resume Fest

Every Fall and Spring semester we hold Resume Fest prior to the Career Fair and Career EXPO, allowing students and alumni the chance to get their resumes critiqued by professional recruiters. There will be two Resume Fest opportunities. No appointment necessary.

The nest Resume Fests will be held in the fall 2023 semester.

Professional Dining Etiquette

Learn to dine like a diplomat! Know the fine points of professional dining etiquette and gain a significant advantage over the competition.

Our Professional Dining Etiquette training consists of a lunch or dinner at which participants dine while being instructed on professional dining etiquette.

Career Boot Camp

CTD hosts two Career Boot Camps every year at the Engineering Center for the Spring and Fall semesters. The Career Boot Camp is designed to prepare students and alumni in gearing up for career fairs. This event provides an opportunity to participate in workshops presented by several employers and staff all in one day.

Seating is limited - students and alumni wishing to attend Career Boot Camp need to register to save their seats. Also, professional attire, copies of your resumes, and notepads are highly encouraged!

The Art of Networking

Come practice your networking skills in this simulation networking that will be moderated and facilitated by one of our top recruiters. Enjoy hors d'oeuvre, meet other students, and practice your networking skills in a simulated networking atmosphere.

Student Career Leader Program

In Fall 2016, FIU Career and Talent Development rolled out its first student career leader programs at MMC and EC.

Benefits of becoming a Student Career Leader include:

Vet Work at FIU

As you transition from military to civilian life, CTD is here to help you to get your career on track. Veteran Career Success (VCS) is a professional development program that aims to assist all FIU veteran students and alumni achieve career success; through resume and cover letter writing, job search help, financial planning, career readiness and professional development.

Being in the military is an exceptional experience which brings a lot of exposure to different skills and competences that might be different from the traditional student.

Therefore, translating these experiences to civilian language is imperative on your career journey as employers value these skills. The VCS program not only aims to educate and guide you on your career path but also provide campus wide resources to ease your transition and therefore, educational life at FIU.

Getting Started

De-militarize your resume: Translate any “military lingo” into workplace language that can appropriately show case your skills. There are many resources out there that can help you identify and translate such job responsibilities.

Using resources such as Military-Civilian Skills Translator or  O*NET MOC Crosswalk that will help you identify the skills you can translate over. It is important to note that the jobs, occupations or careers offered by such translators do not mean that is all you are capable of doing. Use it as a guide to mold your resume for the career you want to go into.

Additionally, it is important to obtain your Verification of Military Experience and Training form (DD Form 2586). Use this as a starting point that lists all education and training obtained during your time of service.

Once you have identified these skills, proceed to formatting your resume and cover letter. Use the following as guides to put together your documents:
